MCK is proud to be recognised across the East Midlands for our work on Places of Worship. These buildings present a unique challenge: keeping people warm and comfortable while protecting historic fabric — stone, timber, and centuries-old features that can't tolerate the wrong kind of heat, damp, or disruption. We know that no two buildings are alike — each has its own character, history, and individual needs — and we bring the experience and expertise to work sensitively within that, delivering plumbing and heating solutions tailored to the building rather than a one-size-fits-all approach.
Getting the Heating Right
Large, high-ceilinged spaces don't respond well to one-size-fits-all heating. We typically recommend a background heat that ticks over gently — enough to keep the building dry and stable without stressing old timber or stonework — combined with a boost of warmth ahead of services when the space fills with people.
Rather than trying to heat vast volumes of air right up to the rafters, we often favour more targeted approaches: heating people, not empty space. Options like pew heaters or radiant panels warm worshippers directly and cost far less to run than heating the whole building.
Zoning is another key tool — being able to heat just a side chapel, vestry, or small meeting room independently means you're not paying to warm the whole building for a small midweek gathering.
Protecting Your Pipework
Frozen pipes are one of the biggest risks to historic buildings — a single burst can cause devastating water damage to fabric that's impossible to replace. We make sure exposed or vulnerable pipework is properly protected or drained down ahead of cold snaps, so a cold winter doesn't become a costly disaster.
When it comes to modernising facilities — adding a kitchen, tea point, or accessible toilet — we plan pipe runs carefully to avoid cutting into historic walls, floors, or foundations any more than absolutely necessary.
Keeping You Compliant
Boilers and heating systems need regular attention to stay safe and efficient. We carry out annual servicing in line with requirements, and we're careful about where plant equipment is sited.
Every place of worship is different, and off-the-shelf solutions rarely do them justice.
